Learning how to become a fashion designer

Video from Nicky Clarke

The rate at which more and more individuals are settling for fashion designing should speak volumes about its worth. It has never been an industry for everybody and it never will, but those who’ve dared to dream and aspire to follow the dreams, trust me they have seen it all. Top fashion designers command power and respect, and needless to say, this is certainly a very rich industry.

There are steps to follow if you are to reach great heights in this big industry.
1. Being passionate about fashion: – The greatest adventure starts with attitude and ambition, and should any of them lack, you’re definitely in for a shocker. Personal drive and ambition pushes you to the limits and certainly gives you an edge.
2. Research: – Many have tried, many have failed. Many have come, many have gone. Take your time to establish why, putting your answers together. Understanding the market requirements and trends is a good starting point as you’ll employ your creativity to get your designs in the market.
3. Be ready to learn: – No man is an island; ask Ralph Lauren and Co. To get to the top, you should be ready to learn from other people in the field. The slightest information availed can be of great help if put into consideration.
4. Sketch your ultimate plan: – Assuming you’ve thoroughly grasped the market needs, make a plan of what you intend to showcase and how you intend to do it. Getting the most strategic platforms on time can be hugely rewarding as that provides the base from which your products will be noticed.
5. Be patient: – If there is anywhere that the adage “patience pays” is practical, then it’s certainly here. Getting your designer line noticed may take some time, and the sooner you realize that, the better.

Karen Millen

When the term fashion design is mentioned to many people, the only groups of people that come to their mind are women. This is because women have been so receptive to fashion as compared to other groups like the men and the children. Women are always particular about what they wear, how they look and the more the trends change, the more reason why so many fashion designers like Karen Millen target this group. It is believed that a fashion designer who targets women will never go wrong because their designs will always sell in the market especially after the fashion designer wins their confidence and trust. Karen Miller started with women’s clothing and when they were received well in the market, she went ahead to design other items like shoes, ladies’ bags, footwear, outerwear and also jewelers. She had to take it slow in the fist place because she was not sure what women loved at that time, but after gaining their trust and loyalty, she went ahead to producing so much at the same time and she never went wrong.

Diane Von Furstenberg

This Belgian-American fashion designer was born on December 31, 1946 and made waves in the world of fashion in 1972 with her iconic wrap dress. She was formerly part of the German princely House of Fürstenberg, having married the Prince Egon of Fürstenberg and was therefore known as Princess Diane of Fürstenberg. Their marriage was short-lived following their untimely divorce in the same year she made a name for herself in the world of fashion. She was no longer permitted to use the title of princess when she remarried in 2001 to Barry Diller.

Her real name is Diane Simone Michelle Hafin and she was born in Brussels, Belgium. Her parents are Leon Halfin, who was born in Romania and later immigrated to Belgium, and Liliane Nahmias, a holocaust survivor. Diane obtained a degree in Economics at the University of Geneva in Switzerland. She started cultivating her interest in fashion designs in 1970 with a starting investment of $30,000.00 telling herself that she had to start a career on her own, not totally dependent on her husband, Prince Egon, and at the same time establish her own identity. This proved to be the starting point and the birth of her “female power” as she wanted to prove to the world that she was not entirely dependent on her husband where she was clearly then well-provided with all the comforts of life.
